Re: So England vs Iceland. Win win situation.
Not sure a single England player has much if any experience playing a 3-5-2. In terms of possible gambles, or round pegs in square holes, it would be an absolute extreme roll of the dice imo. I'm not really sure what the benefits of it would be anyway - have we looked short of an extra centre-back on the pitch so far?

I like the cut of your jib Sir!

That'd be the team I'd pick. Not the Barn Owl though, I'll bet.

Exactly. I was just thinking of a way to get what players we have taken out into the best possible 11 and that's what I came up with.

I wouldn't of took that squad mind so my actual 11 would be different to that.

Carroll would of definitely been on my bench for a plan B.

Based on current form we'd do worse than to play both CLYNE and WALKER down the right.

Look RAHEEEEEEEEM is starting and that's all anyone and everyone needs to know...

Wingbacks is not the worst idea, considering what we've taken out to the tournament- IF the players are comfortable playing that system...

Re: So England vs Iceland. Win win situation.
Not against Iceland as I think this would be too defensive and we should take the game to them, but against a better opposition I would like to see how we performed using this team:

-------------------------Hart---
----------Smalling--Cahill--Stones--
Clyne-----------------------------------Rose--
-----------------Dier-------Rooney------------
------------------------Alli---------------------------
--------------Sturridge--Vardy------------

Purely because Clyne plays as if he is a right mid anyway. It looks defensive with the five at the back but it can also be extremely attacking with the attacking midfielder in Alli and the two strikers with Clyne also bombing forward for support in attack.

Early goal is a must.

The longer this goes on, the more frustrated the crowd, the nervier the players.

I think we'll win 4-0.

Re: So England vs Iceland. Win win situation.
Hart
Walker
Smalling
Cahill
Rose

Dier
Henderson

Rooney
Alli
Lallana

Vardy

In that fucking order.... none of this playing strikers out wide bollocks. 3 up front doesn't work when they are all similar players...

Re: So England vs Iceland. Win win situation.
Workmanlike Woy will pick Sterling and fuck it up for most if not all of the game....

El Scorchio 12:59 Mon Jun 27
Re: So England vs Iceland. Win win situation.
Hart

Walker
Cahill
Smalling
Rose

Dier
Alli
Rooney

Sturridge
Kane
Vardy

Should be able to do the job? Not too lightweight in the midfield?

Rossal 12:53 Mon Jun 27
Re: So England vs Iceland. Win win situation.
It would also change our shape

go 4-3-3 drop Lallana and get Kane Vardy and Sturridge up top to make something happen

El Scorchio 12:53 Mon Jun 27
Re: So England vs Iceland. Win win situation.
No I don't think it will happen.

But if I were him I'd have to seriously consider it. Rose and Bertrand together on the left HAS to be more effective than either of them with Sterling.

Not fussed if Lallana plays on the right, but I wonder if there will be any room for him to actually do what (I assume) he's in the squad to do.

Lee Trundle 12:50 Mon Jun 27
Re: So England vs Iceland. Win win situation.
That won't happen.

He'd basically be admitting he fucked up massively (which we all know) if he did that.

El Scorchio 12:49 Mon Jun 27
Re: So England vs Iceland. Win win situation.
Had a thought about tonight and our glaring lack of width in the squad- should.could the manager be brave enough to double up on full backs?

Maybe play Walker in front of Clyne on the right, or Rose and Bertrand on the left?

Their delivery can't be much worse than Sterling, and at least we'd be able to get in behind the Icelanders rather than playing one twos across the midfield 40 yards from goal all night.

Re: So England vs Iceland. Win win situation.
To a degree Hodgson's selected team have been a victim of the new format. Letting third placed teams through to the next round has led to smaller teams parking the bus. The England squad all play in the premiership where that doesn't really happen - it's "end to end" blah blah blah - they're not used to it. Annoyingly, with the exception of maybe Wales, we were stuck in a group with teams that couldn't play. Would like to think - if we get past Iceland - we'll given a bit more space - due to better opposition and the knock out format rendering sitting back not an option.

Downside is that it may mean Woy gets another 4 years after a heroic 4-3 against France.
